Can a cracked window be repaired or does the glass have to be replaced?

The glass has to be replaced. Nothing restores the strength of a cracked pane, and the crack keeps travelling with every temperature swing. The frame almost always stays, though. We cut a new pane or insulated unit to the opening and fit it into what is already there, which costs a fraction of a new window.

How much does home window glass repair cost?

It depends on the size of the opening, the type of glass, and whether the frame is staying. Replacing a failed insulated unit inside an existing frame sits well below the price of a replacement window, and that is what most calls turn out to need. What causes fogging between window panes?

The perimeter seal on the insulated unit has failed and moisture has got into the sealed cavity. It cannot be cleaned, because the moisture is sitting in a space you cannot reach. Defogging services drill and vent the unit but do not bring back the insulating value. Replacing the sealed unit inside the existing frame fixes both the look and the performance.

Does shower glass have to be tempered?

Yes. A shower or tub enclosure is a hazardous location under the building code across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, so tempered safety glass is required and ordinary annealed glass is not permitted. That is not an upsell, it is the code, and any glazier quoting untempered glass for a shower is quoting something they cannot legally fit.

Do I need a permit to replace window glass in my house?

For replacing glass in an existing frame, generally not. Changing the frame, enlarging the opening, or altering the exterior appearance of a property inside a historic district is a different matter. Historic districts are common across this region and the process differs by jurisdiction, so we check the address at the estimate stage and tell you what applies before anything is ordered.
